Research- Trailers

During this section of my research i will be looking at horror film trailers and how they make the audience want to go and see the film. By using mise en scene and camera angle they make the film become a horror genre. Instead of using nice and happy soundtracks for the film they use sounds which are scary and can make you feel on edge.

This is the trailer for the film The Unborn. During this trailer all of the conventions for a horror film are used and the use of mise en scene, camera shots, sound and editing are used to make the trailer just as chilling as the film.
To start with i will analyse the way in which the film has used sound. To begin you hear thuds and banging quite softly but then as the trailer progresses it gets louder and faster. Then you start to hear the soundtrack which is a piano playing very softly. You can also hear the air making the audience shiver. Near the end of the trailer the sound gets louder and you begin to hear loud noises such as banging of something or someone screaming. They have towards the end very silent moments of sound so that they can suddenly have a very loud bang or scream so that the audience is in suspense and then they are unexpectedly hit with a loud sound which terrifies them. Ending with a very loud scream shows that something scary is happening to this character and that to find out why she is screaming you will have to watch the whole film giving it some suspense and making the audience what to watch the film to find out what is going to happen.

The costumes worn in this trailer shows a woman wearing normal everyday clothes which show that you wouldn't expect anything to happen to her. Also it shows that she is normal and that she is not the main villain of the film. Whereas at the end of the trailer it shows a woman sitting in a chair who is wearing what looks to be a hospital gown. This shows that she maybe hurt or in pain which could suggest that she may be the one who may be looking for revenge and maybe the person who everyone is terrified of during the film. The doctor in the film is wearing a suit and over it a white coat. This shows that he is wearing what he should be which shows that the costumes are not unrealistic as people are wearing what people outside of the film would wear as well. The woman at the end of the film is wearing lots of make up to suggest that she is what is the unborn. The makeup makes her look as if she has just been dug up from the dead. A she has horrible teeth with no face around her making it look as if she has been dead for a long time. Also her veins are coming out and her and she looks very skinny making it clear to the audience that she is the one who has been reborn.
The camera in the trailer has many different angles and shots used to make the film scarier. As they have used shot reverse shot it shows the woman and a young boy one who appears to not actually be there. By using this camera shot it shows the audience who she is communicating with when the other characters in the film cannot see them there. By using a close up of her eyes it shows that they are two different colours showing that something isn't right. This shows the audience something creepy which they may not have noticed if it wasn't a close up shot.
This trailer i would say some of it is in chronological order but as they have some things where the audience wouldn't be able to tell what part of the film that would be more unexpected and as a horror that would be a good thing. The text overlap during the trailer helps the audience to understand the film a bit more and gives them more information without using to much text. It tells the audience the producer and co writers which is information i must use in my trailer and the writing is also quite Gothic and spooky which fits in with the horror film.

The next trailer i will be looking at and analysing is the horror film called 'Orphan'.

This trailer uses mise en scene to make the film appear to be realistic. They have made the girls costume to be suited for someone older than she is. In her class at school everyone is wearing something current and something you would expect girls that age to be wearing whereas this girl is wearing something a girl her age would wear years and years ago. The girl has a very pale face as she is the character who everyone is afraid of so they have tried to make her makeup look different from everyone else's without making her look the obvious character who is going to be the villain.
The sound in this trailer begins very soft and quite nice for a horror film but then it gets louder and quicker and the music changes to become more of a harsh sound. The girl voice is quite a big part in the trailer as when she speaks to someone the music gets quieter so that people can hear what she says and know that it is important.
The use of text overlap is very effective in this trailer. They use text overlap to write 'theres something wrong with Ester' which shows the audience who to look out for. Also they have someone who says it while its written on screen so that everyone doesn't miss it. This shows that its very important and the trailer has showed the audience who to look out for so that when they watch the film they know who is important so they wont miss anything and they will understand the story.
The camera angles and shots suggest that the girl has something dark within her. They use a high angle shot and have the girl looking up at the camera which shows that she is different and would imply that she could be the evil character that everyone knows that there is something wrong with her. It also has a close up of the girls face who is looking very upset and angry. By showing this shot it shows the audience that there is something wrong with this girl and also that something or someone has upset her.

The trailer starts with the girl in the orphanage showing that this is not the beginning of her story as the audience will be wondering what happened to her parents and how long she has been in the orphanage. This may not be shown in this film but will have the audience wondering what has happened to her. The trailer starts in chronological order as it starts from where the parents met the child but as the trailer continues it shows things which could happen at any point in the film and you have no idea how its going to end.
The transitions between the girl and the rest of the characters is edited very well. They have some sort of accident or tragic scene to then the girl and something shes said or done. This makes you think that the girl is doing these things and that no one can stop her. The transitions make the audience more apprehensive and it creates more suspense as they become quicker. This trailer uses all the horror film conventions to make the audience feel uneasy and frightened.

This trailer is from the horror film 'The Grudge 2'

The Grudge 2's genre is horror and this movie follows on from the first film. As it is a sequel then this film must do all of the things the first one did as it was a very popular film.
In this trailer the mise en scene is used very well to make the evil character really stand out and look scary. The use of the makeup and the costume makes the character look very frightening and terrifying. The use of the pale white face makes her look as if she is dying or already dead and as everyone else has there normal skin colour it makes her stand out. The black and red eyes show her to look tired and worn out as if she has been doing something ie. doing all of the murders. Also it shows that she looks dead as if someone has killed her and she has now coming back for revenge which they show through the makeup not just through the script. The costume is a white gown which shows that she could be hurt or that she is not like a normal girl and doesn't wear nice dresses and clothes. This could show she is not in her right mind and she is a bit crazy.

The editing in this trailer shows all the main bits in the film to look out for but doesn't show how and why they happen. In this film they do have continuity editing as from the first film they have to make sure that everything flows. They have made sure that the girl from the first film has the same makeup and looks exactly the same which shows that they have made sure that everything flows which makes the film more believable.
In this film the sound keeps to the horror conventions and uses usual scary sounds such as banging and screming. Also it also starts of slow and then begins to get faster as the trailer is reaching its climax. This gives it more tension and makes the audience more apprenhensive and anxious. The sound gets quiter just before somethings about to happen which make the audience feel uneasy knowing something is coming. Then suddenly a scream or a loud bang makes the audience jump and really feel scared.

Throughout the use of camera angles and shots this trailer in particular makes you feel anxious. When they show the girl they use an extreme close up of her face. This shows us that they want us to see who they really are and that they are a real person but something has happened to them to make them to make them this way. from the use of shots such as the over the shoulder shot it focus' on that person showing is that they are important. Movements of the camera show the audience little things which are important as by using such camera angles and shots like close ups, high angles, low angles and shot reverse shot this gives the trailer more things that make it more chilling. In this trailer text overlap is also used to make it more frightening. They have certain phrases which explain some things which happen in the film. The font and and the text size also fit into the horror genre and they use it to make sure that the trailer show's scary things so that people will want to see the film as if they are not scared by some of the elements in the trailer then they maybe less likely to want to go and see the film.
