Poster and Magazine Front Cover Photographs

Here are some photographs that my group have taken for the Front Cover of the film Magazine and for the Poster. We have considered mise en scene and used lots of different camera shots/angles. We have made her make up very dramatic so that she will look very scary and so that it will be a very stand out image to our target audience. We have also considered the setting as our genre is horror we wanted something that will be very chilling. We have our actor in a forest and she will be surrounded in a dark and creepy wood setting.

Group Meeting 2

In this group meeting we have discussed mainly the storyline and the costumes. As we are doing a psychological horror we have came up with something to make the audience think. We have decided to make the storyline a bit complicated so the audience will always trying to figure out what is happening.
For the storyline we have decided to start off with our actor walking in a corridor into a mental hospital and then show them in there room which will be mainly white. She will be rocking whilst looking agitated and uncomfortable.
Whilst she is in this mental hospital she will have a flashback of herself and her sister playing on the swings as children and then suddenly there will be a scary character standing behind them holding a weapon. Then when the flashback has ended she will be in a lot of distress and anger. From this the character will escape and start walking down a road where she will be skipping and pulling down her own wanted posters.
During this trailer we will make it clear that her sister in the flashback has been murdered and now the sister how is the mental patient will be looking for revenge.
We have decided that the woman in the flashback near the start of the trailer will end up being the mental patient who was the one to murdered the sister at the swings yet she does not realise this until the end of the film.

The actor will be a member of my group who is a seventeen year old girl. To come to this decision we took auditions for the person who would be best suited for the role. We auditioned two young girls for the role. They are both seventeen years old and both have blonde hair and are quite small. These two girls were asked to do a scene that we prepared for the trailer and they were asked to be as scary as they could. In the end we came to the decision that we would give the part to the girl who had longer hair and who appeared to look younger because we think she was what we imagined for the role of both the innocent girl and then turn into the more scary character.

She will be playing the woman who is the murderer who is the mental patient. Her costumes will be a long white dress/ gown as when she thinks she is the mental patient. For when she is the murderer she will be in a long black dress and in high heeled shoes.We have brought the white dress/ gown from a vintage store so that it will look like a classic gown for a mental person. It is very basic and goes down over the actress's knees yet not fall length as hospital gowns dont go all the way down to the floor. The black dress is a combination of a black lace dress and a long black skirt which looks very spooky.

We also discussed the hair and makeup in this meeting. We have decided for the character in the black dress will be having lots of dramatic makeup on especially around her eyes. This is because we want the focus to be on this certain characters eyes so the audience can see that she is both characters. This is so people will understand that she is the mental patient and the murderer. We also want the woman with the black dress to have a very curly and crazy hair style so that it looks messy and looks as if she doesn't care about her appearance as she is just thinking about her murders.
The character with the white dress/gown will be having very straight hair to make her look more scary. Also we want her to look possessed and creepy. This girls makeup will make her look very pale and drained and we may consider putting mascara down her face so it looks as if she has been crying at certain points in the trailer. We may do this just before or after a flashback of her sister.

The actor who will be playing the sister in the trailer will be another member of my group and we will discuss there apperance and costume at a later date.

Poster and Magazine Front Cover Drafts

Here i will be drawing out my poster and magazine front cover as a draft using paper and pencil. I will post them on my blog to see where i began so i can show my development to when i finish them in Adobe Photoshop.

This is the first draft of my poster-

This first draft shows where i am going to position each of the features that need to be on the poster.
I have placed the tagline at the top of the poster as i want people not to miss that aspect of the film as i dont want the image and the title to over power the tagline and therefore the audience may not read it. Also as a group we are doing a psychological horror so i we could explain some of the storyline through the tagline so it must stand out.
The main image will be in the middle of the poster which is because most poster's have the image covering it and i want to follow the conventions of current posters so that my poster will look professional. Also i have placed it in the middle so that it is what most people will notice first.
The title will be placed just under the image so that it stands out and as most people look at the image mainly then if the title is just below they will not miss it.
Any further details will be placed underneath as they are not the most important thing yet they still need to be on the poster as these details give more about the release of the film.

This is the first draft of my Magazine Front Cover-


The name of the magazine will be positioned at the top of the magazine so that everyone will see it and also as it is important to know the name of the magazine is should be positioned at the top. Also most magazines put the name at the top then i would like to follow this so that my magazine will look real.
Underneath this i will put the title of the film as this is the next most important feature of the magazine. I want this to stand out just as much or even more than the name of the magazine. As i am advertising the film then the title is very important and should be postitioned at the top.
The image is the main focus of my magazine as like many other film magazines. I will be using the character as my image rather than the actor as i want to make the magazine as much about the film as i can but also showing other features such as other film information.
The barcode and price etc will be in the corner as they are not very imporant parts of the cover yet do need to be positioned on there so that it looks professional.

Research- Questionnaire Results

Now that we have finshed handing out our Questionnaires we have gained results that we need to get the right audience research we need to make our own posters, magazine front covers and trailers in order to make them very popular. We made three Questionnaires so that we knew exactly what makes each one look of a high quality.

We asked 10 people for each questionnaire we had produced to answer each question.

The results we obtained are as follows:

Questionnaire results for Traliers-

Question 1- We found that four people found out that a new film has released by the trailer, whereas five people found our a new film was coming out by the poster. Only one person has seen a new film being released via a magzine front cover.

Question 2- Seven people put that they found black and white trailer to watch scary whereas only three people put that they were too hard to watch.

Question 3- We found that four people were attracted to a horror film from the trailer by just the costume which made us very aware of our costume choices and now we will make sure that our costumes are very scary. Three people said the setting and two people said the music whereas only one person said the title of the film. The option for setting was also popular as the audience wants to see a scary setting as well as scary actors. Finally, the option for actors was popular as they are usually the most scariest thing in the horror film.

Question 4- We found that seven our of ten people like text or captions in the trailer and the other three people put that they prefer it without.

Question 5- Nine out of ten people like a voice over in a trailer showing that a voiceover is a good way to explain some of the storyline so that the audience will understand the film better.

Questionnaire results for Posters-

Question 1- We started of by asking what attracts you to a film poster. We found that six people put they are first attracted by the image, only two people said the title and one person said the tagline and one person also put the colours.

Question 2- Ten out of Ten people said that the film poster did have an effect on whether they went to go and see the film. 

Question 3- We then asked what was most frightening aspect about the poster's creation. Five people said that a close up image was very frightening and two people said that a longshot was the most scary. Whereas two people also said that the setting in the image was very scary and only one person said that a collage of images was the most frightening.

Question 4- Then we gave out four different horror film posters and asked the ten people which one they thought was most attractive. Four people liked the 13 Ghosts poster the best and only one person liked The Happening poster the best. Four people found The Eye poster the most attractive for a horror film poster and one person like the poster for The last house on the left.

Questionnaire results for Magazine Front Covers-

Question 1- Six people stated that a magzine front cover should say it features more general things and four people said that everything on the front cover should be suited to a specific genre. So on my magazine front cover it would just feature horror realted things rather than a more general cover.

Question 2- We then asked the audience what do you like the film magazines to feature and we found that five people stated that they liked photoshoots to be featured on the front cover and only one person wanted articles to appear on the front cover. Two people said they wanted interviews and two people wanted insider information on films on the front.

Question 3- Nine out of ten people said that they would like a specific colour scheme. I will take this into consideration when doing my own Magazine Front Cover as the majority of people do like this on their Magazine.

Question 4- This is an open question where there we gave the audience the opportunity to put any option they wanted to. Here were the most popular answers. The majority of people we asked wrote that they look for the Image, the colour scheme and Masthead to really stand out and look interesting.

Question 5- Six people prefered the Total Film Magazine with the film 'The Terminator' on the front cover as it really stood out.

Evaluation of Results- 

I have found out by looking at these results that there are certain conventions that need to be done so that it looks like a realistic film. We found that the poster is the way in which most people find out about a new film, followed by the trailer and then the magazine cover. This has showed us that we need to make our poster stand out so the audience can be amazed by it and then have more interest in the film.
We also found that more people find black and white trailers scary and as we are making a horror film this must be taking into consideration when editing our trailer. From this we have considered as a group that we should make some part of our trailer black and white.
Finding out that costume matters the most to our target audience has enabled us to make some ideas up about the costume such as using an old dress or using a scary black skirt with a red top. As second in the list turned out to be the setting we have decided to discuss the locations in detail so that it will show the audience that the setting is an important part of the film.
As seven out of ten people likes having some captions and phrases during the trailer we will do this to explain some things in the trailer that the audience may find confusing. Also nine people out of ten wanted a voice over so this can also explain what is happening and what is going to happen in the film.

For the poster the image was already important in our group to making look very appealing and from our audience research we have found out that this is very important to our target audience as well. We will take lots of images in order to make our image perfect.
As ten out of ten people say that the poster has an impact on whether they go and see the film we will do our best to ensure that it really stands out and appears to look as professional as possible.
A close up image is the most frightening image we have found out so we will use this to our advantage as we want out horror film to be as scary as possible.
Also we have find out that a college of images for example like the poster of the film '13 ghosts' and a close up of an eye from the film 'the eye' is also considered by our target audience to be very scary. So if we do either of these things we know that people will find it scary which is our aim.

For the front cover of our magazine we have found out that people like to read the cover that is more general than it all being specific to a certain genre. So when i make my cover i will write about other genres as well as just my own even though my main focus will be my own film.
Photo shoots make the audience very interested in the magazine as we need to make our cover interesting i will say that inside is a photo shoot as well as just articles.
The cover should have a specific colour scheme as this makes the magazine cover look more professional and more structured. As the majority of people said this i will ensure i do this and that it looks good.
Asking people which is the most effective cover enables me to see what i can do to make it interesting and unique. As most people said they liked the flashing cover then it shows me that people want something more exciting and different when looking at a magazine cover.

Research- Questionnaires

Using the Questionnaires that i have made will help me to see what is popular when making my trailer, magazine front cover and my poster. In my group we will make three questionnaires one for the poster and how they advertise the film so that the audience will be captivated by it and then want to go and see it. For the trailers we want to see what in particular about the trailer that they find very interesting and therefore makes them want to see what happens.

Research- Promotional Packages

In this post i will be looking at promotional packages of films. I will see how the use of the trailer, poster and the film on a magazine front cover will help to make people more likely to go and see the film. By looking at all the different things used to advertise just one film will help me to make my coursework stand out more and make people enjoy my film.

The first film and promotional package i will look at is 'The Ring 2'. This is the poster for 'The Ring 2'.

In this poster for ‘The Ring 2’ it shows an image of a girl sitting in a chair. The image is a very powerful part of the poster. The image looks as if it has been faded and blurry. This is because it is supposed to keep the mystery and they want it to look spooky.

The main colour in this poster is black as it is the scariest colour and they want things to be dark and creepy so that the poster looks chilling. The section of light is where the girl is showing and that makes the audience think that she is the main character in the film and she the one to look out for.

The costume in the poster is a white gown which shows that she may have something wrong with her and she is not a typical young girl. She is also sitting alone in a room with only one chair which suggests that she is very lonely and she is has no one who cares for her. As this is a horror movie it may suggest that she could be the one who everyone is afraid of. The poster shows this as she is the main focus and she does not look happy but very upset and frightening.  The writing looks like children’s handwriting showing us that maybe the girl on the front  has wrote it. This shows us that she is the one who is planning everything. 

This magazine front cover for ‘The Ring 2’ also shows this girl on the front. This shows that girl has a lot to do with what is going to happen in the film. This magazine follows all of the conventions a magazine has to do for example put the barcode and price.

In this magazine the main feature on the front is the film but it does have other things that will feature on the front as well. I will do this on my magazine front cover so that it looks realistic as it is not realistic that throughout the whole of the magazine they will only have one feature.

The title of the magazine suits the horror genre as it is red and it is in capital letters and bold. This shows that the film can be placed onto a magazine without it looking different.

The girl is the main character in the film and this magazine front cover has her as its main focus which shows that they are advertising the film in the way in which the poster has done which is a good thing as then the most scariest character in the film is being shown making people want to find out who she is and why she looks so scary.

This trailer has a voice over from the beginning. This narrates the story so the audience can clearly see what is happening. Also as it follows on from the first ring movie it may need to quickly say what has happened in that movie so the viewers that did not see the first one can understand what is happening.
The fast moving scenes all ending with this girl who looks very distressed and scary makes the audience feel on edge. Also with putting the girl at the end it shows that she is the main focus of the trailer and could even suggest that she may be the evil character.
There is a moment in the trailer where the young boys face is reflected in an eye. This in particular looks very daunting yet it is a good effect. Having effects does make the film trailer more scary and showing some of the things that will be well anticipated in the film during the trailer is good so that the audience will be excited and therefore want to go and see the film.
The woman in the film wears every day clothing so it looks as if she is normal and not the one who will be evil. Whereas the small girl is wearing a gown which is unusual for a young girl and may suggest that she is the person who is different or strange making her the scary character.
The girl has very long black hair which is very straight. This may show that unlike a normal young girl she does not go to the hairdressers or experiment with different hair styles and she is not concerned with her appearance. This may make the audience feel sorry for her as it may show that her parents do not care about her and as she is not like any other girl of her age it may make her become a bit crazy and it may make her start to feel lonely and an outsider.
The close up of the girls face does make the trailer more scary. Her hair is jet black and is all over her face. This makes the girl look deranged and different from all the other characters shown in the trailer who all look quite normal.
In this trailer they use sound effects such as the body bag being pulled open. This is a scary sound effect and it gives the trailer more of a frightening vibe to it. The way in which the sound, editing, mise en scene and camera angles or shots have been used in this trailer and shown very effectively and the genre of horror definately shines through.

The next promotional package i will be analysing is for the film Paranormal Activity.

In this film called ‘Paranormal Activity’ it is based around a couple who believe there is a paranormal creature living in there house.

The poster for this film has a lot of writing on the front. It is white writing as it stands out against the black. The words written do make you feel quite uneasy and scared. This is because it tells that you will be affected by this film guaranteed. This make you feel anxious.

The image is of a couple who are waking up in the middle of the night. This shows that something has happened to wake them up. Also the door been open suggests that something or someone has left or entered the room.

The little writing in the corner of the image of the time shows that it is just after three am. Some people think this time is superstitious and this would be shown in a film about paranormal creatures.

The tagline ‘what happens when you sleep’ on the poster can make people feel unsafe when going to bed and also wonder what is going to happen to these people when they fall asleep. Also it says ‘Don’t see it alone’ which implies that you are going to be scared of it and that it will make you feel terrified. This is a good thing to make you feel on just the poster.   

In this magazine front cover of Entertainment Weekly it shows the film ‘Paranormal Activity’

The main image on the front shows the couple in bed which is where most of the scary things happen. Without watching the film you are able to tell that the couple is scared showing that something is happening to them.

The text on the front stands out as they are all in different colors’ Also what they say do make you want to read the magazine to find out more. I will try and make my text interesting even if it isn’t about the film so that every bit of the front cover will be interesting.

Showing an image where the woman is screaming make you want to find out why and also automatically make you feel sorry for this person as you can see that she is scared showing that she is not the evil person in the film.  

To begin at the start of this trailer it shows the audience in the cinema who will be watching the film. They start by looking very normal and they are acting very normal but then as the trailer goes on and they see the film they become more agitated and start to scream and look very frightened.
The sound begins quite and just starts with a couple of faint knocking noises. Then it starts to get louder and quicker which i have noticed is a sound convention which a lot of trailers follow. The sound begins to become screams for the audience watching it and this creates more people to be scared as you know that normal people are finding it terrifying so you may likely also find it disturbing.
The mise en scene throughout the film trailer is of people wearing normal clothing which indicates to the audience that it is a true story and this is actually happening to these innocent people. The adults do not wear any unusual make up and there hair looks normal showing that someone hasn't tampered with them and that this documentary horror is completely true.
The way it has been edited shows the start to be less scary and terrifying and then as the film progresses it gets more scary. As it is a horror film about someone thinking there is something else in the house. The way the film gets more scary towards the end could show that the person or thing who is there is getting more angry throughout. This shows at the end there may be something very scary or unexpected that will happen.
The way they have filmed it themselves looks especially creepy. It makes the audience believe that this horror film is real and that this actually happened to these people. The main characters use the camera to show what is happening to them and it makes the audience believe them as we are seeing unexplained things happen through the eyes of the camera.
Altogether, the film trailer definitely shows the horror genre as the realistic qualities in the filming and the mise en scene makes the audience feel on edge. The tension is created and grows during the film as the sound begins to get louder the audience gets more terrified. The reactions from the audience in the trailer makes you feel as if it is going to be a very scary film because they are getting really frightened and beginning to scream which shows the real scariness and horror of this trailer and continuing film.


Finally, my last promtional package i will be analysing is from the film 'The Dark Knight'

This poster is from the film ‘The Dark Knight’

The image in this poster it shows a huge building with a man standing in front. The building appears to have something scorched into it which looks to be the symbol of a bat. A bat usually represents something scary suggesting the man on the front maybe an evil character. Also the costume is black and he has a mask over his face. Now a days this would show someone who is not good and someone who maybe in trouble and who is dangerous.

Although in a film setting the mask and costume could show a hero and not a villain. Also the title may give you a clue that he is a good character as it says Knight you would associate this with a good person. What is good about this poster is that it doesn’t give too much away about the film and that you don’t know who he is gives the film some mystery and danger which an audience could be captivated with.

The tagline in this poster is ‘Welcome to world without rules’. This shows that there will be many risks and threats throughout the film which makes the audience think of danger and also excitement. This shows that will not get bored during this film as there is always something happening in this world.

This magazine front cover has been taken from Empire magazine advertising the film ‘The Dark Knight’

They have used the image of the villain of the film. This shows someone who is dangerous and scary looking showing that the audience will be anticipating this character’s role.

The man in this image has a lot of makeup on his face to make him look more frightening and alarming. This may make people want to see this film as they want to see what this evil looking character will do.

As his hair is messed up and his make up is running shows that he is not worried about his appearance and that there is something more important he has to do.

The green text shows other information on the magazine along with the title of the film. This has been done so that everything will look presentable and not too over the top. This magazine front cover stands out as it is very unique as most magazines have brighter colours and the image really makes the reader fear this person without even knowing who he is. The title of the magzine is black which goes with the image on the front. This shows that they have considered how the image and the title go together on the front of the magazine as they are the most stand out things lots of magazines so they need to match each other. 

The Dark Knight offical trailer shows many action sequences which has lots of intense moments. The sound they use to do this creates the tension by starting off very slowly and then getting faster as the clip gets more shocking. When they have a scary or shocking bit on the trailer the music starts to make people feel more apprehensive and then they are more likely to be stunned when the important bit is showed. During the trailer you hear someone laughing which makes you feel very uncomfortable as you know that something bad is going to happen as the laugh symbolises the villan doing something wrong. 
The camera angles/shots in this trailer show the camera from a crane point of view which shows a building exploding. As it shows the whole building being blown up it suprises the viewer and but as they have used very good effects it shows the audience something they will find amazing. The crane view shows the whole buliding which makes it look more believeable and more astonishing. By using a close up on the villans face it shows his emotions better as the audience can really see how upset, angry and twisted this character is.
This trailer begins with someone jumping off the top of a very large buliding and the editing for this is remarkable. Also the way they edit the trailer with all of the excting parts such as the blowing up of the bulidings is incredible. Showing action scenes is hard as there has to be a very big budget to get the film to be exactly as you want it to be which is breathtaking. When they have editied it they have made sure that through every part of the trailer they is always something coming which is suprising. They have put some of the things which are explosive and incredible near the start of the trailer and some towards the end which make the trailer excting from start to finish and not just one thing at the end but several throughout.
The mise en scene in this particular is very eye catching. The character callled 'the joker' who is the villan has very dramatic make up on. He has a mask through the use of makeup. The lipstick is smeared across the face and there is black all around the eyes while he has a painted white face. This makes the character stand out plus it enables the audience to realise that his role is important. It also looks very messy when put on showing that he has may be done it for himself not like someone in the cast has done it for him. His characters name is 'the joker' so this shows that he needs to show why he is called this nickname which is the reason for the dramatic make up as he does look like a joker. The costume for the hero of the film shows someone wearing a black outfit. Black ususally has connotations for death and darkness so this contrasts agasint the fact that he is actually the hero not the villan. The villan wear bright clothing showing that it is not obvious who is the good or bad character from the costume which gives the trailer and the film more mystery. 

Research- Magazine Front Covers

In this part of the blog i will be analysing magazine front covers as i must make my own i will have to see how they are made to look so appealing that people will pick up the magazine just because of the front page.

This magazine front cover is from a magazine dominated by the genre horror. 
Here they have used a big image as the main part of the magazine. This image is from the film 'The Wolfman' and this image is quite scary and frightening. The image makes people realise that  it is a horror movie as you can tell it is not something nice and plesant therefore it must be something more chilling.
The teeth coming out of the face really stand out. As he is a wolf man this is fitting as now the audience can see exactly what he is then they can see an insight into the film without actually watching anything. This will be good to do when i am making my own magazine front cover as i can try and get some of my film across to the audience but without showing to much.
The writing of the word scream as the title looks as if it has been writen in blood and it is dripping onto the film. This shows that it is horror as it stands out from all the other magazines.

   

On this Magazine Front Cover for empire the colour scheme really makes the text stand out as well as the image. The use of red and yellow is very good as they are very bright and bold colours. Also the black and white text agaisnt the red and yellow looks good as it doesnt make all the colours stand out as if it was just black and white them colours on their own may not look so bold and people may not look at the text and just the image. 

The image used on this magazine front cover does have a big impact on the reader as the choice of clothing and makeup makes the man look very cool yet also daunting. The reader can tell that he is apart of a film which makes the reader want to know more about this character and therefore they will have to read more in the magazine and also watch the film.
Also the use of the prop in the image intreges the reader as they want to find out why he has got this weapon and what he is going to use it for.

The Total Film Front Cover stands out mostly to the reader from the very interesting image on the front. It shows a man white ginger hair holding a rabbit with very dramatic make up on. This choice of hair and makeup interests the reader and makes them want to find more out about him.
The use of the yellow text makes it stand out agaisnt the purple background and it makes the reader look at it first before they read anything else. It reads that they give away a free poster for a different film which is a feature that will make someone buy the magazine from what is just written on the front. As it is free people will want it and because it may be a poster of a film that they like they will also want the magazine. This is clever as then people will buy the magazine as they get something free with it. As i am making my own Magazine Front Cover a feature like this may be good as it does not only just follow other magazine features but it will make people want to buy it aswell.



The Total Film magazine cover is unique as the title blends in with the film. The film is full of complicated and mysterious scenes so this magazine has made that aspect of the film come across.
The image on this cover is a man holding what appears to be a some sort of weapon or object showing that he may be dangerous character. But it also shows some mystery as you dont know exactly what it is so its adds to the mystery and make the audience what to read the magazine to find out more about this character.
The colour scheme is mainly red and blue which do go well together and there is also this metallic colour on the cover, which also shows something more about the film rather than just having  person on the front.
Where they have written 'the mind blowing issue' this makes the reader intregued anad want to read why it it so mind blowing. Also as the film is mind blowing and they have wrote this issue is mind blowing it shows that the inside of the magazine will cover alot about the film.                                                        
                                                          




This issue of Empire especially stands out as it has the writing of Empire surrounding in flames. This makes it unique from all the other issues and also the flames show danger and excitment showing that this magazine is going to be remarkable. As the flames symbolise danger it could show that the film is full of exhilarating moments.
